Enabling Scale in a Growing Philanthropic Organization

Overview

A well-established philanthropic organization partnered with Prime to strengthen executive effectiveness and prepare for its next phase of growth. While the organization had strong leadership cohesion and stakeholder trust, its operating model had not yet evolved to match.

The challenge

As the organization expanded, several constraints emerged:

  • Strategy lacked clarity and translation into execution, resulting in misaligned priorities across teams

  • Leadership bandwidth was constrained, with the principal overly involved in day-to-day operations

  • Processes were inconsistent and difficult to scale, creating inefficiencies and key-person dependency

  • Communication gaps limited alignment, with unclear roles, decision-making, and information flow

Solution

The core recommendation was to establish a formal Executive Office function to serve as the operating engine of the organization.

Key elements included:

  • Dedicated Chief of Staff leadership to act as a strategic integrator and “quarterback” for the executive team

  • Clear operating model and governance, defining roles, responsibilities, and decision-making

  • Standardized processes and systems to improve consistency, reduce friction, and enable scale

  • Alignment mechanisms to connect strategy to execution across teams

Impact

With a formal Executive Office in place, the organization was positioned to:

  • Increase leadership leverage and focus on high-impact priorities

  • Drive alignment across functions and improve execution

  • Reduce operational inefficiencies and reliance on individuals

  • Build a scalable foundation for continued growth and impact
